The North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES), an intergovernmental science organization, was established in 1992 to promote and coordinate marine research in the North Pacific and its adjacent seas. Its present members are Canada, Japan, People's Republic of China, Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, and the United States of America. FUTURE (Forecasting and Understanding Trends, Uncertainty and Responses of North Pacific Marine Ecosystems ) is an integrative Science Program undertaken by the member nations and affiliates of PICES to understand how marine ecosystems in the North Pacific respond to climate change and human activities, to forecast ecosystem status based on a contemporary understanding of how nature functions, and to communicate new insights to its members, governments, stakeholders and the public. • PICES was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Adi Kellermann, a frequent visitor to past PICES events as the former head of the ICES Science Programme. Adi was instrumental in developing the close collaboration between ICES and PICES, a legacy we are committed to continuing. He and PICES Deputy Executive Secretary Skip McKinnell worked together to initiate the joint ICES/PICES Early Career Scientist Conference series. “In hindsight, I found that there were people in our business that you worked with because you had to and people you worked with because you wanted to. Adi fell among the latter” S. McKinnell. More details about Adi’s significant contributions to international marine science can be found on the ICES web page here. We extend our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
