Key Anticipated Outcomes from the Symposium

Convene global practitioners of FIMEC:

  • Document that there are multiple knowledge systems and approaches to execute FIMEC;

  • Ensure that multiple disciplines, expertise, countries and cultures are represented and have a voice in global fora.

Assess progress on the advancement of Ecosystem-based Fisheries Management:

  • Reach a shared understanding of the historical perspective and trajectory of FIMEC (and EBFM/EAF);

  • Increase global awareness and leverage of FIMEC experiences around the world, particularly from underrepresented regions.

Discover lessons learned from decades of practical implementation:

  • To list major, commonly used FIMEC benchmarks and performance indicators from the global experience;

  • Assess progress thus far on the implementation of FIMEC - relative to these key benchmarks and performance indicators - with a more quantitative presentation than case studies.

Establish a future trajectory for ecosystem-oriented fisheries efforts through production of:

  • A statement highlighting FIMEC as the best practice to apply for the management of marine capture fisheries. Specifically including ecosystem considerations is the best practice because it connects target species, non-target species, by-catch, habitats and ecosystem function with ecological, economic and social objectives.

  • A statement highlighting Core standards for FIMEC application, recognizing that pathways may differ between fisheries because fisheries can differ in their objectives (e.g. the balance of ecological, economic and social objectives), their governance, management, information and technical capacity.
    • Outline approaches for assessment and implementations of ecosystem considerations in fishery management. The proposed standard guidelines will specifically recognize that different pathways may be appropriate for different kinds of fisheries.
