GETTING TO LA PAZ

There are two principal ways getting to La Paz.

Option 1

The La Paz Airport (airport code: LAP) is located 18 km northwest of town along the trans-peninsula highway to Ciudad Constitución and Tijuana. There are no international flights to La Paz at this moment, but several Mexican airlines (Aeroméxico, Calafia Airlines, Volaris, VivaAerobus, Interjet) provide domestic connections. Most frequent flights are from Mexico-City (airport code: MEX; 5 flights per day) and Guadalajara (airport code: GDL; 4 flights per day).

A taxi from the airport to downtown hotels costs about US$25-$30. Mexican host institutions would be prepared to provide transportation for groups (5+ people) arriving together.

Option 2

The Los Cabos International Airport (airport code: SJD) is located 43.5 km north of San José del Cabo. This is the sixth busiest airport in Mexico, with many direct international flights serving this airport.

There are many options now for ground transportation directly from the Los Cabos International Airport or from San José del Cabo to La Paz. In general, a private vehicle for up to 9-10 persons costs about US$250 for a one-way trip or about US$500 for a round trip (see “Useful Links” below for some most reliable services). Per person prices can range from US$15 (bus with a transfer at bus station; safe, but not the best option after a long flight) to US$100 (shared shuttle, departures each hour during afternoon).

La Paz is also accessible by ferry (car and passenger) from the Mexico mainland. There are 2 ferry routes operating between Mexico and Baja California Sur offering a total of 9 sailings per week. Baja Ferries (http://www.bajaferries.com/) operates 2 routes: Topolobampo to La Paz runs 6 times per week and Mazatlan to La Paz about 3 times per week. As the frequency and duration of crossings on some routes varies we would advise that you do a live search for crossings from Mexico to Baja California Sur to get the most up to date information.
