GETTING TO LA PAZ: BY AIR

Option A: Fly Directly to La Paz (LAP)

La Paz Manuel Márquez de León International Airport (LAP) is located approximately 11 km southwest of the city center. It offers regular non-stop flights from major Mexican hubs, including Mexico City, Tijuana, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Hermosillo, and Mazatlán, primarily operated by Aeroméxico, Volaris, and VivaAerobus.

From the United States

The most convenient option is flying with Volaris from Tijuana International Airport (TIJ). TIJ is connected to San Diego via the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) — a secure pedestrian bridge that allows travelers to cross directly into the airport terminal, avoiding long U.S.–Mexico border lines.

Airport to City Center

• Travel time: ~20 minutes by taxi
• Authorized taxis are available in the arrivals area:
  • Standard cars (up to 3 passengers): ~US$25
  • Minivans (up to 10 passengers): ~US50

Option B: Fly to Los Cabos (SJD) and Travel Overland to La Paz

Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) is located about 43.5 km north of San José del Cabo. It is the sixth busiest airport in Mexico and offers numerous direct international flights.

Several ground transportation options are available directly from SJD Airport to La Paz:

Shared Shuttle (Most Affordable)

• Fixed schedule with multiple daily departures
• EcoBajaTours: ~US$60 one way per person
• Travel time: 3+ hours (with stops, including Todos Santos)
• Routes may follow either the Pacific coast (faster) or the Gulf of California (slower)
  

Bookings can be made via Busbud. Advance reservations are recommended. Allow at least 1 hour for immigration and customs at SJD due to high arrival volumes. Boarding location: Terminal 1, Pickup #5.

Private Transportation (Most Comfortable)

• One-way distance: ~195 km via Highway Mex-19 (Todos Santos)
• Travel time: 2–2.5 hours
• Cost: ~US$100–200+, depending on vehicle size (up to 9–10 passengers)

This option is ideal for groups or travelers with fixed schedules.

Car Rental

Car rental is recommended if you plan to explore Baja California Sur during your stay. Discover Cars is a commonly used platform, though comparing rates across providers is advised.

OTHER WAYS TO REACH LA PAZ

Ferry

La Paz is accessible by passenger and vehicle ferry from mainland Mexico.
Baja Ferries operates overnight routes from:

• Mazatlán (≈ 13–15 hours)
• Topolobampo (≈ 8–11.5 hours)
  

Ferries arrive at Pichilingue Port, approximately 20 minutes from La Paz.
Schedules vary, so a live availability check is recommended.

Driving

La Paz can also be reached by highway from Tijuana at the U.S.–Mexico border.
