FUTURE Scientific Steering Committee
Terms of Reference
  1. Provide leadership and scientific direction to implement the PICES FUTURE program;
  2. Report semi-annually to Science Board on progress achieved by the FUTURE science program, and to identify impediments that hinder progress, and to recommend solutions/actions to enable progress;
  3. Work with PICES Standing Committees and Expert Groups to ensure collective and integrated delivery of FUTURE;
  4. Develop new Expert Groups as required;
  5. Integrate, promote and stimulate national activities around the vision statement and core science questions of FUTURE;
  6. Identify and facilitate interactions with national/international research programs from which FUTURE could benefit;
  7. Communicate FUTURE research and products in order to translate them into high level impacts for PICES and its member countries.
  8. Provide recommendations to Science Board on options for implementing PICES integrative science. (added Oct. 2018)
  1. Implementation Plan Term 2016-2020 (pdf)
  2. FUTURE SSC Liaisons (pdf)
  1. SSC will prepare a table of liaison between members and Committees and ExGs. Identify roles and tasks of the liaisons (e.g., communicating with Chairs), to be communicated to ExG chairs
  2. SSC to prepare a template and guidance on how, what and how frequently Expert Groups (ExGs) report on accomplishments, including suggestions for new ExGs; request to have ExG return templates to SSC 6 weeks prior to Annual Meeting.
  3. SSC to structure FUTURE Mini-Plenary at 2015 Annual Meeting around three talks highlighting exciting FUTURE science by early-career scientists on topics related to new ExGs: tipping points & resilience as they pertain to cumulative stressors in coastal regions, climate model downscaling & predictablility.
  4. SSC to structure a FUTURE Mini-Symposium at the 2015 (and perhaps subsequent) Annual Meetings to begin with co-chairs’ overview of ExG progress (based on ExG template reports), followed by short ExG reports and open discussion around FUTURE Roadmap & priorities. Open meeting
  5. SSC to facilitate development of ExG proposals for consideration at ISB or Annual Meeting. Work on draft ToR and membership for priority ExGs for approval at the Annual Meeting. Discuss at ISB.
  6. Aim to have 1-2 WebEx meetings of SSC prior to the Annual Meeting. Co-chairs to determine specific agenda items for meetings. (Late afternoon PDT is morning in Asia.)
  7. Consider a workshop proposal for April 2016 to do a SEES-type comparison among regions from each of the countries.
  8. SB to ask national delegations (GC) to identify any national priorities for FUTURE to focus on.
